Winchester VA Real Estate, Winchester area and Community Information

Winchester, Virginia, is a prosperous community about 75 miles west of the nation's capital. Winchester is the home of Shenandoah University, and its population is now approximately 28,000. The area's heritage as a one-time home to many apple orchards has been commemorated by artistic renderings of apples that now appear throughout the community. Since 2005, approximately 20 large apple sculptures have been permanently exhibited around town.

History

This area was long respected by Native Americans as a sacred hunting ground. Settlers of European descent arrived in the early 18th century. Col. George Washington designed Fort Loudoun in 1756. The original fortification occupied about an acre in what is now downtown Winchester.

Jim Barnett Park is located right next to Shenandoah University. Those that invest in Winchester real estate can enjoy both indoor and outdoor pools, outdoor basketball courts, baseball diamonds and even a disc golf layout. Enthusiasts can head out to the BMX track, and anglers can go fishing on the lake. The recreation center here also offers residents with Winchester properties a full gymnasium.
