Front Royal VA Real Estate, Front Royal area and Community Information
Front Royal, Virginia, is a suburb in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area. This Warren County community is today home to about 13,000 residents. Many commute to jobs in northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. Front Royal has been named the "canoe capital" of Virginia.
Front Royal's past includes an interesting bit of charity from Bing Crosby. In 1953, Frank Nesbitt coached the Front Royal Little League team to a third place finish a world tournament. Crosby got to know him, and the crooner and actor subsequently donated the funds needed to build a baseball stadium here.
What eventually became Front Royal was known to European settlers as early as the 1670s. The community was formally created in 1754 as LeHewtown. It was incorporated as Front Royal in 1788. By the 1790s, the settlement became known as "Helltown," thanks to the numerous livestock wranglers and Shenandoah River boatmen that were pouring into the area. The Alexandria, Orange and Manassas Gap Railroad was completed between Manassas and Riverton in 1854. Because the line was then extended all the way to Strasburg, it played a role in the Battle of Front Royal on May 23, 1862.
